Virtual Run, Late Post

So I think I ran 5Ks on Saturday.  Regular readers may remember I was going to run the Social Distance Virtual 5K sponsored by Rock City Runners of Little Falls.  I ran something, at any rate.

I meant to write my blog post about it yesterday, but I feel sure my readers will forgive me. I was undecided as to whether or not to run right up to the last minute. One factor in favor of running was that my $10 registration would benefit Little Falls Food Pantry.  I suppose I coukd have just made a donation directly and had done with, but we all know that is not my style.

All bright-eyed and bushy-tailed?

I took a before picture. Please note that the shirt is from the Reindeer Run 5K, also sponsored by Rock City Runners. The only 5K track I could remember was the Herkimer Dare 5K.  At least, I hoped I could remember it.  I think the last time I ran it was 2013.  That may have been the last time anybody ran it, since, alas, it is no longer a thing.

I knew it ended at my beloved Historic Four Corners.  I walked there from my house and put my sweatshirt and water bottle at the Herkimer County Courthouse.  I was pretty sure nobody would bother them, but I used my shabbiest sweatshirt and water bottle just in case.  I walked up Main Street to the starting point.

Not surprisingly,  I could not recall the exact spot, although I knew it was not all the way at German Street.  I picked a spot that looked good, and off I went, like the proverbial herd of turtles.

I knew to go down Main to Church Street, all the way out Church, around the corner to German Street and up Lou Ambers Drive to Herkimer College (or HCCC, as I usually call it).  Oh, it was not fun going up that hill!  I went up it once recently, and went up another bad hill earlier in the week.  It did not seem to matter.  However, if there is one thing I know how to do, it is to persevere.

Once I got up to the college, I realized I was not quite clear on where to turn around.  The Dare 5K has two routes.  One goes just to the college, then down the back road and through Brookfield Park (also known as the Unknown Park in this space). When that route suffered damage in the flood of 2013, they changed to run to go up through the parking lots of the college and back down Lou Ambers Drive.

I ran all the way to the parking lot by the gym.  I think that was how far the route went.  In any case, I am sure it went no further.  Better too far then not far enough, I thought.  I felt pretty awful by the time I turned around.  Oh crap, was this even going to work?

After I turned around,  I felt better.  What a difference a little downhill makes!  When the downhill got a little steeper, I didn’t like it as much.  I leaned back and kept it under control.  I thought about really making use of gravity and barreling down that hill, but I am a little leery of getting out of control.

The only problem I had once I got back into the village was that I somehow got it into my head that I should turn onto Prospect Street.  Where were those damn Four Corners?   Stupid!  I should have turned at Main Street!  A turn onto Church Street corrected the error, and I don’t think it changed the length of the run.

My hair is so pretty!

When I got home I took another selfie.  I felt pretty pleased with myself, although I also felt pretty awful.  A shower and breakfast helped.  I went for a short run on Sunday (today).  And I see I have written kind of a long blog post.  Not a bad weekend, I say.

Pre 5K Post?

Yes, I am making my Friday post early Saturday, morning.  I just couldn’t make  Lame Post Friday post on Good Friday.  I imagine I have done so before, but of course I am too lazy to go back and check.  Additionally rendering Lame Post Friday inappropriate,  I do not go back to work on Monday after all.  Did I mention that on Thursday?  That is when I found out (again, too lazy to go back and check).

On the not so lazy side, after I publish this, I shall go running.  I hope to do a virtual 5K, sponsored by Rock City Runners of Little Falls, NY.  I may have mentioned this before:  I register  on Run Sign Up Dot Com, pay $10, which benefits Little Falls Food Pantry; run 5Ks all on my own, and upload my results… somewhere.

The uploading is what mystifies me.  Upload what where?  Type 38:52 into… some website?  I pulled that number out of the ambient air as a guess as to how long it will take me to run 5Ks.  I feel quite foolish and ignorant,  but that’s me,  an ignorant  fool.

Never mind.  I am approaching 200 words and the bottom of my coffee cup.  Let’s get this dog and pony show on the road (of course I do not run as fast as either of those nice animals).  I may not know how to upload results, but I can write a blog post about them. As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

Who Is That Masked Blogger?

The CDC has recommended that we wear face masks in public, and I notice that a number of people are taking that advice.  For most of us, not medically employed or immune compromised, a home made mask is good enough, and preserves the medical grade ones for those that really need them.

I had to go to a doctor’s appointment today and decided it would be a good idea to wear a mask.  Naturally I went to Facebook for advice.  One video said you can use a bra to make a mask.

Nailed it!

I thought the result was so attractive (pronounced “ah-trah-ctive”), I posted a picture on Facebook.  A friend commented that I could also make a mask from men’s underwear.  My husband Steven was happy to loan me a pair (YES they were clean!).

I would rather use the pair with the red hearts.

OK, I was just being silly.  When I was done with nonsense (for the moment), I followed the directions from a video I found on the Covid-19 Information Center, using an old t-shirt.

I had to finagle my earrings out from under it.

On the advice of another friend,  I pulled it further up my nose and put my glasses on top of it to keep them from fogging.  A nurse at the doctor’s office complimented me on my homemade mask, so that made me happy.

After returning home, I put my mask in the laundry, as advised by the CDC.  I shall fashion another one if I have to go out tomorrow.  Luckily I have a number of old t-shirts.

Stay safe, everyone!

Whatnot Walk?

Here is a new feature I am stealing from another blogger: Whatnot Wednesday.  Biff Sock Pow, a blog I follow, published a hilarious post today, titled Whatnot Wednesday: Intense Consecration.  Then he said we can play along:  make a blog post, tag it #WhattnotWednesday, link back to his post, share our link in his post.  I felt inspired to play along but could not think of what to make my post about.  Then I remembered I did not use all the pictures I took for yesterday’s post.  That’s pretty whatnot, isn’t it?

The water doesn’t really look like water, does it?

Yesterday I was writing about a walk I took.  I left off with some daffodils.  Next I walked over to the high school, which was right across the street.  Running along one side of the parking lot and behind the school is a stream.  I tried to get a good picture.

It was more picturesque before they added all the chain link, but safety first.

I often run over the little bridge behind the school.  I stopped doing that over the winter, because of course it froze more readily than the ground.  These days it is just fine for running purposes.

Kind of the view from the bridge.

It was not so easy taking a picture from the bridge, because of the chain link fence.  I was not able to get the angle I wanted.

Do you know what it is? I don’t.

I noticed the above machine on yesterday’s run, in the athletic fields behind the school.  It was almost as big a draw for me to photograph as the daffodils.  I’m hoping someone will tell me what it is.

Well, I think this is definitely better than a Wuss-out Wednesday post.  Any thoughts?

Attempt at a Pedestrian Post

I saw a couple of things on my run this morning I wanted to take pictures of.  Since people tend to like my Pedestrian Posts with pictures,  I set out this afternoon with my Tablet.  I wore my crazy old lady hat, which has a wide brim, and my prescription sunglasses.  It was one of those walks where the bright sun made it hard to tell if pictures were any good.  Luckily, I think I have enough for a good post.

I hope you can see the buds.

The first thing I saw was a magnolia tree with buds that looked close to blooming.  I do love a magnolia tree.

The picture doesn’t do them justice.

Next I saw some daffodils.  My own daffodils have yet to make an appearance, but once I got my crocuses, I feel hopeful for everything.

These were right near the daffodils.

I continued down German Street towards Valley Health, where some miniature daffodils had caught my eye.

Aren’t they pretty?

What fascinated me about these blooms was that they were surrounded by dried crap from last fall.  Nobody had bothered to cultivate them, so it seemed, yet they were determined to spread beauty and happiness.  Or do I credit flowers with more thought processes than they actually posses?  I don’t really know about these things.

A longer view.

I tried to get a shot of the tiered beds that held the daffodils, but I don’t know how successful I was.  But you can see all the brown competing with them.

And now a note about writing:  a common piece of advice is do not worry about mood; start writing and the mood will follow.  It is not always true.  As I write this, each word is getting just a little bit harder.  I feel I should not share that, because, well why bother you with my petty problems?  And yet, other writers may find it comforting.

Or not.  In any case, I am over 300 words, and I still have enough pictures for tomorrow’s post.  I’m going to call this a Tired Tuesday post and drive on.

Will the Real Monster Please Stand Up?

I am going to make a fast Monstrous Monday post and not offer any excuses.  I hope.  In fact, a few little excuses may worm their way in, that is just how my mind works.  Never mind, let’s just fine a creature I have not shared recently.

I know, this is not a monster! Unless you ask Joan Crawford.

I was scrolling through my Media Library looking for a picture of Nosferatu when I came across this one.  This is the one I was looking for yesterday of Bette Davis in Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte.  Well, I think a psyco biddy in a graveyard is perfectly acceptable for Monstrous Monday.

“You were looking for me?”

Here’s my guy, Count Orlok.  Regular readers know Nosferatu is my favorite.  Full disclosure:  I do not pop the movie in very often, because I find it is too much effort to watch a silent movie.  You have to pay close attention, so it is not easy to knit at the time.

“What do you mean, Bette Davis isn’t a monster?”

I thought I would throw in another psycho, although I am not sure I would classify Joan Crawford as a biddy in Straitjacket.  What do my readers think?  Please express your opinions in the comment section.

In the meantime, I am over 200 words.  I’ll just close with one more monster picture. Happy Monday, everyone.

“Who are you calling a monster now?”

Does Watching Movies Count?

I think this will be a Wrist to Forehead Sunday post.  I don’t think anybody will be particularly surprised, least of all me.  I have been sitting here most of the day being unable to do much. Of course, it is a truism of my life that I am almost incapable of getting anything done on a Sunday, and that is true in the best of times.  Although I personally have very little to complain about,  these are clearly not the best of times (did anybody else just flash on the opening of Tale of Two Cities?).

I had thought to have a Sunday Cinema post,  since of course we are watching movies.

That’s no rhododendron!

We started with Little Shop of Horrors,  because today is Roger Corman’s birthday.  I SO prefer the original black and white horror/comedy to the more recent musical (although the movie of same is now “old,” the stage musical has been presented by area high schools).  However, to each his own, as the old lady does it when she kissed the cow.

Next we watched Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte, because it is also Bette Davis’ birthday.  I love a good gothic horror, especially of the psycho biddy genre.

An excellent cast, but where’s Cecil Kellaway?

After that I went on to a couple of unmemorable monster movies, for which I do not have pictures in my Media Library.

And look, I am over 200 words.  I am going to count that as a win and hit Publish,  before I swoon onto a handy chaise, dramatically posed.  Happy Sunday, folks.

Late Post, But Here Are Some Crocuses

When in doubt, open with flowers.

This is embarrassing.  I completely forgot to make my blog post last night.  I was watching movies, chatting with my husband, drinking wine…  You know how these thing go.

Earlier in the day, I went for a longish run and fully intended to make a Saturday Running Commentary post.  I went for a long walk but did not bring my Tablet with me.  And that’s about my life these days.  Not a bad life, but not so good for blogging purposes.

The earth, however, continues to go about its business, and I was delighted to see that we finally got a few crocuses.

Look for it, it’s there!

A couple days ago I first noticed a little bit of purple and a few buds. I said, “Yay!”  Yesterday, I saw that some of the buds had bloomed too.

My favorites are the white with purple veins.

And one more off to the side!

The two lovelies I opened with are in the back yard. I always say I have to take my happiness wherever I can, and the crocuses make me happy.  Noticing last fall’s leaves which I still have to rake, less so.  Then again, raking is exercise that gets me out into the fresh air.  It might even make a good blog post.

There’s Always Someone

As time loses all meaning for some of us, I make bold to have my usual Lame Post Friday.  For one reason, I return to work Monday, so Friday will once again mean something.  Not as much as it once meant, with bars and restaurants closed, and wine tastings cancelled at the local liquor store.

Oh dear, that sounded like whining about what is really a very small inconvenience to me, all things considered.  I can just hear people gearing up to say things like, “First world problems,” or, ” It’s better than catching the coronavirus,”  or the dreaded, “Just be thankful that…(you have a job, you can order take-out, the liquor store is open, etc).”  Here is a not so random observation:  it is really difficult to say anything without it being the wrong thing to say according to to someone.

Anyways, I will still be in a time warp next week, because I have Good Friday off.  And what a weird Easter we are all going to have!  At least, those of us who mark the holiday.  I am going to count that as another random observation.

If I could come up with some half-baked philosophy,  this would be a complete Friday Lame Post.  For that, I hark back to my first observation.  It is always wrong according to someone.  It is never enough, according to someone.  So there is no point in worrying if we are good enough.

As I typed that, I was assailed by the thought that this blog post is not good enough, even for Lame Post Friday.  Alas, the thought came from me.  Does that make me someone?  Discuss amongst yourselves.

Addendum:  Apparently I am not going back to work till Monday the 13th.  But I’ll let this post stand, because, well, I’ve already gotten a couple of Likes on it.  You know what a Like junky I am.

Morning’s Memories

That’s me, putting my husband in his place.

I saw this photo in my Facebook Memories this morning, and it did bring back good memories.  I thought I would use it in a Throwback Thursday post.  It is a rehearsal shot from Morning’s at Seven, a play I did last year at Ilion Little Theatre.  It was a great deal of fun.

I still have a copy of this, I think.

This is the flier, which we hung up all over the town, I hope.  At least, we got some good audiences.

This was kind of a dramatic moment.

Here is the entire cast on stage in costume.

Split screen of the same room.

And here are a couple of backstage shots.  Backstage is often as interesting as what goes on onstage, but I think this play was pretty interesting onstage. I do not recall any particular backstage dramas.  I try to avoid such things.

Pre-show cast selfie!

To prove my point about no backstage drama: here we are all before a show, looking perfectly happy together.  I loved the cast, crew and director of this play.  Yay for good memories.

A posed cast picture.

As long as I am having a Throwback Thursday about Morning’s at Seven, I might as well share all the pictures I can find.

And I gotta share my favorite!

This is one of my favorite scenes of the play, where I have a heart to heart with the character played by my good friend, Jim Mills.  He is  wonderful actor, and we both had a great time doing this scene.

It is nice to look back on theatre experiences past, and I hope one day soon to make some new memories.  Of course, I will make a few blog posts about it!
