I Wouldn’t Waste an Axe Murderess, Would I?

Regular readers may have noticed that daily blogging continues to elude me.  Ooh, there’s a slimy passive-voice way to put it, as if I am pursuing the goal, but the goal is too clever for me, when the fact is that it is my own efforts that fall short.  You can call me out on that if you like, but you see I have already admitted the fault.  In any case, having missed posting Sunday and Monday but refraining from calling attention to the fact (till just now), I sit on my couch on Thursday morning preparing to make a Waste Not Want Not Wednesday post.

Full disclosure: I did not look like this when I played Roxy.

You can’t read her name tag, but it says “Roxy.”  It is Roxalana Druse, who famously killed her husband and was hanged behind the 1843 Herkimer Jail in 1887.  I had the honor of playing Roxy in the play of that name presented by the Herkimer County Historical Society and Ilion Little Theatre in 2015 (long-time readers may have read some of my blog posts about it).  This Roxy is in Renewed and Rescued at Mohawk Valley Community Market.  I stopped in briefly yesterday but must return for a longer visit (preview of coming attractions).

Here is a friendly-looking fellow I encountered one of the mornings I was out looking for pictures to go with one of my Village Board stories for Sentinel Media.  I adore Halloween decorations!  I should take some more pictures and do a blog post of them (another preview of coming attractions?)

I guess I am veering into Non-Sequitur Thursday territory after an ax murderess and a skeleton.  This is Michelle, one of the bartenders at the Herkimer Elks Lodge wearing my tiara.  I wore it for a play I was in last summer (Four Old Broads on the High Seas, perhaps you read some of my blog posts about it).  I happened to wear it to the Lodge one day, I forget why, and Michelle wanted to pose with it.

Ooh, look at me, over 350 words.  I’m almost through my second cup of coffee too.  Time to go for my run.  The East Herkimer Fire Department 5K is Saturday.  I fear I have not been posting nearly enough about that!  Well, as I said in the first paragraph, I have not been posting enough period, at least by my standards for me.  But I thank you for tuning in when I do.

I’ll Have to Work on the Pun

I don’t know if I should acquiesce in being not daily blogger (sporadic blogger?  thrice weekly blogger? non blogger?) or get used to most of my posts beginning with an apology for missing days.  It is a conundrum.  I think.

I just paused to look up “conundrum” (in an old dictionary, you know, the kind that is a book) (in case any of you thought I might be catching up with the 21st century).  One definition is anything that puzzles, so that is OK.  However, the first definition says it is a riddle whose answer involves a pun.  I love puns!  Of course I cannot think of any right off hand, but if I can come up with an answer to my particular conundrum that involves a pun, what a triumph that would be!

Once again, I throw in a picture to pep things up.  This is a publicity still from The Tingler, one of my favorite William Castle movies.  It stars Vincent Price, for those of you who do not recognize him in the picture (poor uninformed wretches).  I saw something at work yesterday  (never mind what;  it would take too long to explain) that was shaped like the Tingler, and I thought, ooh!  I began to plan a William Castle Weekend, where I would watch cheesy movies and knit.  I thought I would even make my Lame Post Friday blog post about it.  And then I did not make a Friday blog post.

I knew she would like this dress!  I think she wore it for a murder mystery once.

When in doubt, throw in a beautiful blonde.   This is my bestie, Kim, at Renewed and Rescued in 2019.  This was before Renewed was the anchor store of Mohawk Valley Community Market.  I include this picture, because I may not sit home on my couch today (it is Saturday, by the way) but go out on a few Mohawk Valley Adventures.  Mohawk Valley Community Market may be one stop.

I see I am over 300 words.  So I have, an apology for not posting, a picture from a cheesy horror movie, and a brief shout out to a local business.  I am going to say OK and hit publish.  As always, thank you for tuning in.

Congratulations, Renewed and Rescued!

Saturday marked the fifth anniversary for Renewed and Rescued, one of my favorite Herkimer businesses.  Naturally I went down to celebrate with them.

Renewed and Rescued is the anchor store and the founder of Mohawk Community Market, a wonderful vendor market in the old Munger’s Department Store on North Main Street in Herkimer.   They feature a wide variety of items ranging from repurposed vintage furniture to local artisan products and even including some food!

Getting ideas for Christmas!

I wrote my congratulations on a poster board they had set up, following my name with “aka Mohawk Valley Girl” but foolishly did not take a picture.  After looking through the room with clothes (I could use a new fabulous outfit), I went on to the food samples.

Good stuff!

I sampled some cheeses and a delicious pumpkin butter while chatting with some of the people who worked there.  They were very friendly and kind.  I was especially fascinated by some flavorings you can add to water.  Personally I drink plain water all day every day and love it, but I was just talking to a co-worker who can’t stand it plain. I will have to recommend these to her.

You could also add them to coffee and other beverages.

I wandered around looking at the other vendors’ wares and on into the basement, which now includes Mungers 1918 Luncheonette.  I mean to go there for lunch one day soon.  That will make for a delicious blog post!

A Busy Saturday So Far

I pause in my activities to make a Scattered Saturday Post. Check it out: I am making a Saturday Post ON Saturday!

We got up stupidly early as usual (not as early as when I work, but still, you would think I could sleep in once in a while). I went for a short run, wrote a few post cards, called my Mom and Dad, all the usual stuff. Then Steve and I set out on a few minor adventures.

First we went to Collis Hardware in Herkimer, NY. We dropped off a basement window frame to have plexiglass put in it. I am embarrassed to tell you how long we have been putting this off, so I will keep that bit of information to myself.

They were very nice there.

Next we went a little ways up the street to Mohawk Valley Community Market. We spent some time looking at the various vendors.

Renewed and Rescued is the store that started the Market.

I asked if I could take a picture of the staff, because they looked so cute in their Halloween costumes.

They graciously posed.

After that we were feeling peckish so went to Honey Brook Bakery for a treat.

After a brief interlude at home, eating our treats, we drove to Ilion. First we went up Otsego Street so I could show Steve some of the great yard decorations I have been enjoying on my way home from work. Then we went to the Thrift Store in search of materials for our Halloween costumes.

Our last stop was at New 2 You Consignments, where I scored a baggy of bead necklaces. They may not be right for my Halloween costume, but then again, I may stretch a point.

We are now relaxing at home, but soon we will begin getting ready for a Halloween party at the Frankfort American Legion, featuring our favorite band The Posers. Yay!

I Sip Wine and Contemplate Saturday

So it’s Lame Post Friday and here I sit without much to say. I know, when has that ever stopped me? I have been having a pleasant evening, sipping wine and watching true crime television.

This photo was not taken tonight; in fact, I am not even drinking white wine. But I thought it was an apt illustration. I do not rule out having a libation in a public place, masked and socially distanced, of course, at some point this weekend.

I have other plans to accomplish first, however. I mean to go running, even if it is cold and blustery. I have a few Mohawk Valley Adventures in mind, some real writing to do, and, of course, a house to clean.

Just to throw in an example of a potential adventure, here is a picture of Rose Quartz Stand, a gem store on Mohawk Street in Herkimer, NY. I need to support my favorite local businesses, not just the bars and liquor stores!

Another spot I could visit is Renewed and Rescued, part of Mohawk Valley Community Market on North Main Street in Herkimer. Full disclosure: Steven and I browsed there last Saturday before going to the End Zone Pub and Grub. I should have mentioned it in the blog post.

Whatever I do, I hope to make a good blog post about it. As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

Picture Shopping

I love shit like this!

How about a Wordless Wednesday Post?  Of course, I am never entirely wordless.  However, earlier this afternoon, I stopped by Mohawk Valley Community Market and took several pictures.  The above was taken just as I walked through the door.

 

Santa Claus is coming to town!

The sign in the chair said when Santa will visit, but I did not make a note.  No doubt you can find out via their Facebook page.  I am sure social distancing rules will apply.

Mohawk Valley Community Market is located at 140-142 N Main St., Herkimer, NY.  They are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday,  10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.  Special hours may be in force for this weekend, but they will be open and obviously ideal for Shop Small Saturday.

Busy Day Before 15K

I had a pretty good Scattered Saturday.  I had to be careful not to overdo it, because I might be running 15K again tomorrow.  I believe I mentioned the mini-maker at Copper City Brewing in Rome, NY Sept. 13.  Even though I ran my official Virtual Boilermaker last Sunday, I am signed up for the run in Rome.  I messaged Copper City and offered to act as a volunteer instead, if they needed another one.  In any case, I will be up early in the morning and off to Rome.

With a possible 15K in mind, I took a short run this morning.  On my cool-down walk, I stopped at a neighbor’s house, where they were setting up a garage sale.  They did not mind me taking a sneak preview.

Before garage saling, however, I had other chores to do.  I put a load of laundry in the wash and wrote a few post cards.  After the laundry was in the drier, I headed to Richfield Springs Community Food Cooperative, where I planned to have a cup of coffee and write.

For a picture of the Co-op, this shows a nice view of the opposite side of the street.  After that pleasant interlude, I went back home to Herkimer to consider further options. I went to two neighborhood garage sales, where I made a few fun purchases.  Then I decided to walk to Main Street to the Mohawk Valley Community Market, which includes Renewed and Rescued, and Wakefield Furniture.

Unfortunately,  it was close to their closing time when I got there.  I went across the street to the End Zone Pub and Grub for a beer.  When I was in the army, a drill sergeant said it was a good idea to have one beer the night before a PT test.  YES, I had just one beer!

Now I am home and taking it easy before my big day tomorrow.  I had a bowl of pasta and I am hydrating.  Am I better prepared to run 15K than I was last week at this time?  I don’t know.  However, I had an enjoyable Saturday and I am looking forward to Sunday.

Errands and Beer on Non-Sequitur Thursday

Today I went for a walk with a few stops to make.  I carried my Tablet thinking to take a few pictures to make a blog post.  We’ll see how well I did.

I hoped to get the hanging flowers in the shot.

My first stop was to pay our water bill.  I also took a picture of the memorial to K-9 Ape, who sadly died in the line of duty.

From there I walked down Main Street to Renewed and Rescued, a consignment shop which has expanded recently.  I was particularly interested in a vendor shot  occupieed by a friend.

I did not know how to get the picture without my reflection opin the mirror.

I mean to make a longer blog post about the various new vendors.  For today, I merely took some pictures and repaired to the End Zone Pub and Grub for a refreshing beverage.

After enjoying a draft there, I decided to stop at Pete’s Tavern for one.  He has been doing some renovations and I wanted to check them out.

I did not get to sit at the bar today.

Still Supporting Local

These days I am torn between the desire to stay home, stay safe and keep my germs to myself, and the desire to be out and about, get material for blog posts and support local businesses. Lately I have erred on the side of Support Local.  Isn’t that what one would expect of Mohawk Valley Girl?

Today I went to my beloved Herkimer County Historical Society on Main Street in Herkimer.  For one reason, when I was there before, I missed some post cards.  For another, I wanted to grab a couple more masks.  The masks were donated to the society specifically to be sold to raise funds.  And they have some lovely designs.

Next I went to Renewed and Rescued further down Main Street.  They have expanded!  It’s awesome!  I must make a blog post telling more.

And there is plenty of room for even more merchandise!

I had come in specifically to look for clothes, but first I had to walk all around at the new space and stuff.  Finally I stopped browsing and found myself a dress, a pair of shoes, and a present for Steven (I did not go in looking for the last item, but what’s wrong with an impulse buy?).

I counted my trip as successful, although I can’t help wondering if the blog post is up to par.  No matter.  We’ll just call it a Tired Tuesday and drive on.

Wordless Shout-Out?

So I’m Tablet posting today, and I think I’ll pep things up with a few pictures and try for a Wordless Wednesday.   I wonder if there’s anything on the Tablet that’s any good.

When in doubt,  go with the beautiful blonde. This is the picture of my dear friend Kim at Renewed and Rescued, the consignment shop in Herkimer I wrote about for Mohawk Valley Living.  The dress may or may not be exactly the fifty-first in Kim`s wardrobe, but close enough. As I related in my article,  I saw the dress, knew Kim would like it , brought Kim to the shop, and found that I was right.

I love the lights.

Here is another picture of the shop.  I really must do a whole post about them. For now, a couple of pictures must suffice.  For one reason, I HATE typing one letter at a time with the stylus.

The store offers upscale clothes as well as vintage and locally made jewelry.  I purchased earrings and a bracelet.  In addition to the dress, Kim found a pair of shoes .
