I Run Into a Blog Post

I return to daily blogging (I hope) with a Saturday Running Commentary Post. I am ten-finger typing on the laptop, instead of stylus pecking on the Tablet, just to give you the picture. Or was that uninteresting extraneous information (and is “uninteresting extraneous” a redundancy)? I answer no to both questions and continue with my post.

I was unable to sleep beyond five this morning (and most of the night as well, but never mind that). Coffee tasted good, and I enjoyed a cup and a half before getting into running clothes and setting out. I thought for something different I would turn in the opposite direction as usual, running toward State Street (also known as Route 5) instead of German Street. I could run out the path by the canal. I wanted a long, easy run, and that one is a good 50 minutes. I took a bottle of water, so I could hydrate as I ran.

Not two blocks from my house, I thought, “I don’t want to run 50 minutes!” Reason being I have not been doing 50 minute runs. Of course the 10K I recently ran in Little Falls took longer than that, but that was a special one-time thing. What was I thinking, jumping from 30-40 minute runs up to 50? Additionally, I wanted to be near the spring when I finished my water. I love Herkimer spring water.

Making a new plan as I went, I ran to Meyers Park and up through it. I admired the picnic tables that were donated from various sources for the Downtown Chowdown (perhaps you read my blog post about the Downtown Chowdown). I saw someone had added a child-sized table. Cute! I went down Park Avenue (ooh!) and turned up Prospect Street. I considered going instead to Main Street, so I could go by my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners. However, I ran by the Corners yesterday so Prospect it was.

Right away I came to the Do Not Enter sign at Bellinger Avenue. Regular readers know I can rarely resist entering when it tells me not to. I did not resist it today. I ran all the way down Bellinger to its end by the high school. I ran across the little bridge and into the high school parking lot. This brought me near Valley Health Services, the residential area beyond, and of course the spring.

After some debating to myself, I ran up the hill by Valley Health. I find this hill to be challenging enough under most circumstances. It is neither as long nor as steep as the hill up to Herkimer College (previously known as HCCC), but I am not in the best of shape these days.

As I ran, I kept an eye on my Garmin (actually my friend Jay’s Garmin, which he graciously loaned me). My pace was not bad, for me. I make no apologies for my middle-aged shuffle. It suits me. I did not run up any other hills, but I kept going for just over three miles. Since my next goal is a 4 1/2 mile run at Iron Rock Brewing (sponsored by Rock City Runners) in September, I felt this was OK. It started raining as I ran the last two blocks, so I did not go on my usual cool-down walk.

And I see I am over 550 words. That is a long post for me, although sometimes my Running Commentaries do go on. It felt pretty good to run, and it feels even better to blog. As always, thank you for tuning in.

Interlude at Iron Rock

Saturday after I got the horrible news of my dear friend’s passing, I did not want to do anything but stay home and cry. However, I had been texting Jenna, another theatre friend, about possibly meeting up somewhere. I thought it might do us good to get out of the house. It turns out I was right.

We did not stay for the band.

I suggested we meet at Iron Rock Brewing in Little Falls. I had not seen Jenna in a while, so it was nice to catch up.

Steve and Jenna.

We enjoyed the decor and the atmosphere. The service was excellent, as was the beer and wine.

I need one of those.

The large hanging is by a local artist, but I did not get the name. I daresay my ceilings are not high enough for such a thing, but I think it is pretty awesome.

Lots of choices!

It was a very nice interlude. I highly recommend getting together with friends at Iron Rock Brewing in Little Falls, NY.

At 3:37 (l)a(me).m.

Does that headline make sense? Should I have put “At 3:37 Lame M?” Discuss among yourselves.

Once again, I am late in making my Lame Post Friday post. Sufficiently lame, I trust. In my defense, I have no defense. In a possibly mitigating circumstance, it is 3:37 a.m. according to my laptop, which many consider the middle of the night. I think they are right. It is not my insomnia: I have overtime 5 to 11 a.m. today. Team player, I tell myself. I am a team player. Anyways, the money is nice.

Where was I? Nowhere in particular, I suppose. Here is a new thing: sometimes lately when I say, “Good morning,” I note the expression of the person I am talking to and add, “It is a wish, not an observation.” I thought it was funny.

Last night, Steven and I enjoyed a dinner of appetizers at Jamo’s in Herkimer, NY. We have been a little profligate about dining out lately. It is a combination of still being so happy we are able to and the desire to spend a little time in air conditioning. Oh, the humidity! (You know, like “Oh, the humanity!” Does anybody even remember that? I personally was not a witness, but I’ve heard about it.)

OK, it is pretty obvious I am only typing in words in order to post something, anything. I consider this legitimate, since I am still trying to be a daily blogger. As always, thank you for tuning in.

Me, Need Beauty Rest?

I want to make a fast post then try to get some sorely needed beauty rest. I think we can bear another Throwback Thursday Post. Of course I cannot remember which pictures I shared last Throwback Thursday (and as usual am too lazy to go back and look), but I shall try not to repeat myself much. Then again, isn’t Throwback Thursday all about repeating ourselves? Discuss amongst yourselves

I do not know if they ever found an answer.

The above is an actual headline from the Utica OD. I originally took the picture to share on one of my pun pages on Facebook. I still like it.

My favorites are always theatre throwbacks. This is from The Tempest, presented by LiFT, Little Falls Theatre Company, at Benton Landing in Little Falls, NY, back in 2017. Fun times.

A toast to friendship!

My other favorites include friends and wine! This is me and my friend Phyllis at Gerber’s 1933 Tavern in Utica, NY. Note to self: check if they have re-opened yet.

I think a few closing words will bring me up to 200, my usual goal. Oh, I am tired! I don’t care if rest makes me beautiful or not, I need some! I hope you all had a lovely Thursday.

Ice Cream for Supper? Yes, Please!

Steven and I did a rather naughty thing by having ice cream for supper. I had a good excuse. You see, I had submitted an article about Honey Brook Bakery in Herkimer to Mohawk Valley Living magazine, only I neglected to take any exterior pictures. I suppose I could have taken the pictures and not eaten any ice cream, but what fun is that?

Steve holding my purse and bag while I take pictures.

It had been raining, so we did not take advantage of the outdoor seating. Perhaps another time.

I checked: the chairs were almost dry, but not quite.

We both got sundaes. Steven’s had a brownie and hot fudge. Mine had a cookie and caramel sauce. We both had chocolate ice cream. Yum! We could not finish them. I put the extra in a couple of bowls in the freezer. I love leftovers!

One of my pics.

Honey Brook Bakery is located at 310 State St., Herkimer, NY. They are open 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

We Chow Down in Herkimer

Steven and I have been wanting to go to the Herkimer Downtown Chowdown for a while now. Tonight we finally made it.

We enjoyed the music from the band while we scanned the food trucks, deciding on our repast.

Nice lady!

I must return next week to purchase a t-shirt. I chatted with Melody Couchman, the volunteer selling them. She graciously allowed me to take her picture. She told me the band was called Last Left. We agreed that ’70’s and ’80’s music was great.

I wish I had gotten a better picture of the band.

We really enjoyed Last Left. Another local band to watch for! When I walked by to take a picture, I saw that Herkimer High School Class of 1983 was the sponsor of tonight’s event. I think my high school class ought to sponsor something!

We both felt full from dinner. However, after looking at some of the stuff offered by the Mad Batter Bakery (don’t you just love that name?), we reconsidered. Steven had a chocolate filled finger, and I had a plain donut. Then we were really stuffed!

I could have sat and listened to the band longer, but we needed to get home. For one reason, I wanted to make this blog post. I was happy to see so many people out enjoying the evening and the event. We also saw a lot of cute dogs. Altogether a very enjoyable time.

The Herkimer Downtown Chowdown is held every Monday, June to October, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Myers Park in Herkimer, NY.

Wrist to Flowers

Yesterday’s 10K really took it out of me. Could I be getting old? SAY IT AIN’T SO!!! More likely I do not lead a healthy enough lifestyle. Be that as it may, I am feeling too drained for anything but a quiet Wrist to Forehead Sunday Post. Luckily, I have a few pictures of my backyard to brighten things up.

Lots of yellow!

Going out my back door yesterday, I saw our Brown-eyed Susans were going great guns.

A longer view.
And the other side of the deck.

I continued down the yard to check out the Rose of Sharon and Black-eyed Susan’s.

Yay! More blooms!
Another angle.
More Black-eyed Susans as well.

As usual, flowers cheer me up. I still feel tired but not nearly so ready to swoon (you know, dramatically posed with the back of one wrist against my forehead). The coming week looms ahead of me, a threat or an opportunity? Time will tell. Time is certainly a blabbermouth.

In the meantime, I am almost up to 200 words. With six pictures, I call that a respectable blog post. Thank you for tuning in.

10K, Wine, and Fritz

I shall make a fast Scattered Saturday Post, just so as not to be late yet again. Full disclosure: I have had a little wine and will greatly enjoy to return to the sitting on the couch, knitting, television watching portion of the day.

I ran the 10K this morning, slowly. I wore my Garmin (actually my friend Jay’s Garmin, which he nicely long term loaned me), so I knew I was running faster than my normal pace. I guess everybody runs a little faster on race day. The run really took it out of me. I took a nap later this morning.

After the nap, I had some iced coffee and Gatorade, drinking double fisted, not mixed together. I almost forgot to write my weekly postcards but luckily remembered before pick-up time for the mail boxes in front of the post office. I walked there, then downtown, where some Herkimer Diamond Days festivities were happening.

A band was playing. My husband Steven and our friend Kim joined me. We purchased a slice at Enzo’s Pizza and carried it across to the End Zone for a glass of wine.

By the time we were ready to leave, Fritz’s Polka Band was playing. We danced to “Secret Agent Man” while I took a picture.

I love these guys!

I’m afraid the picture did not turn out very well. I guess this is one of those Saturdays where the day is better than the blog post. You’ll have that. On the brighter side, I made a post! That is not a given these days. Thank you for tuning in.

As a Rule, I Like to Run

New rule for Mohawk Valley Girl: No more 10Ks in August.

I am sitting in my stuffy house (although the fan and open door are helping), typing on the laptop (with all ten fingers, yes!), late once again for my Friday post (Lame Post Friday, but never mind that), and I wrote the preceding sentence and the paragraphs that follow earlier this week, so I shall type them in while sipping coffee (making a few edits as I go, I add in the interests of accuracy). Then I shall return to my pre-race jitters.

One might think that as I have run the Boilermaker 15K in July more than once that hot weather running would hold no terrors for me. My first thought was to say, “That’s different.” I guess it is, since the final month of training for the Boilermaker takes place in June, which is sometimes not as hot. However, in one respect it is similar: almost every time I run the Boilermaker I vow I am not going to do it again. What does that tell you about me? Seriously, what does it tell you? It just confuses me.

My problem is that for the past week we have had one damn sticky heat wave. This puts quite the damper on my last week of preparation runs (see what I did there? Damp, because humidity is wet? Oh well, I thought it was funny). Additionally I am currently working from 5 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. No cool-ish early morning runs for me.

I determinedly put on running clothes and braved the heat and humidity Tuesday. Oh, it was bad. Every step of that run was a chore. I could not remember why I ever liked running in the first place. However, I made it for two miles and even ran up a couple of hills (not big ones). I did not even finish my usual cool-down walk. A voice in my head said, “Nobody said you had to walk for ten minutes.” I felt that was a good point.

I duplicated the effort on Thursday, minus the hills. I admit it was marginally less heinous.

And here I am on Saturday morning, feeling as usual that coffee is heaven, up in time to eat something nutritious and let it digest before the run (probably a whole wheat English muffin with peanut butter). Today we are supposed to get relief from the heat and humidity. Yay! My 10K is in Little Falls, part of their Canal Days festivities. I hope after running 10Ks I have enough oomph leftover to enjoy some of them. It would make a good Scattered Saturday Post (which we all know I may be typing in Sunday morning). As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

Did I say Electrified Zombie?

I pause in my evening activities (full disclosure: I was not doing anything very exciting, but I hope to watch some true crime television right along here) to make a Throwback Thursday Blog Post. This should be easy. All I have to do is find some good pictures.

In my defense, it has been a crappy week.

This is both a Throwback and Preview of Coming Attractions. These poops were used in two different murder mysteries. They may be used again in a murder mystery this fall. Did I say murder mystery? Yes! One may be upcoming. I’ll share more details when I have them.

Threatening, yes?

I do not remember when I took this shot, but it is apropos, because the weather reports keep threatening storms. I said I would like it if I got struck by lightning and turned into an electrified zombie type of monster. I could wander around terrorizing the neighborhood. It would make a nice change of pace for me.

Shady ladies.

Here is a real theatre throwback: Rubbed Out at Ruby’s. Nice.

I hope three pictures is enough. I did start to write a different post, all about the 10K I am supposed to run Saturday. Yikes! That’s the day after tomorrow! I’ll let you know how it goes.

You know, this post seems a little disjointed. I think I’ll categorize it Non-Sequitur Thursday.
