Predictably Lame

I was afraid I would neglect to make my Lame Post Friday post on Friday.  Even my predictive text thingy is on to me.  But it is counterproductive to beat oneself up about these things.  I am lounged on my couch, pecking in one letter at a time with the stylus on my Tablet (thank you, predictive text thingy), sipping my first cup of coffee with real gratitude.

I am up as early as I am during the week, which I feel rather ill-used about on a Saturday, but it is by no means unusual for me.  I opted not to run the Reindeer Run 5K in Little Falls, NY this morning.  One advantage,  I said to myself, was that I could sleep in (oh well).  It was still a kind of a load off my mind.  I have not been running as much as I like to before a 5K, and even in my best shape (which is still kind of round and puffy), I get so nervous.  I like butterflies, but not in my stomach.

Predictably,  I feel a little wistful now. It is such a fun run, and I get to dress up.  Oh well, maybe next year.

Oh dear, I suddenly realize:  I have gotten predictable!   We knew I would make my blog post late!  We knew I would not sleep in on a Saturday!  We knew I would feel bad about not running the 5K!  I need to find something unpredictable to do right away.  I can make a blog post about it.

I suppose you knew I was going to say that.

Morning Walk

Ooh, look at the time!  It is about ten minutes to seven on Friday morning.  That is not early morning for me, as regular readers may know.  Regular readers may also have observed that I missed posting Wednesday and Thursday. I am ten-finger typing on my dining-room-table-top, wishing I had a little more to say.  I took a walk this morning, so perhaps I could manage a Pedestrian Post.

It was colder than it has been recently but not as cold as it is likely to become, so I do not repine.  I did wear my biggest, warmest cape, a hat, and gloves.  I got myself a bottle of water, clicked my Garmin to “Walk,” and set out.  I was headed towards Herkimer’s Historic Four Corners, knowing I have nighttime pictures of them in my Media Library (see, even then I was hoping for a Pedestrian Post).  However, I was still a block away when I noticed the moon-a-moolah.  That is what my husband’s nephew used to call a full or almost-full moon.  It was beautiful!  I turned a corner, so I could look at it without walking backwards.

I stretch a point, to include a picture.

I could see the lights from Herkimer Reformed Church as I turned the corner so feel free to include a picture taken in December 2020.  Pictures do pep up a post!

I continued up to German Street, which I crossed, and made the rest of the walk a dead end walk.  That is, I walked up and down a few dead end streets, to look at Christmas lights on houses.  I really must take some walks in the evenings, when more folks have their lights on.

Another shot from 2020.

I did not see this light this morning, nor would I have if I had gone to Main Street.  Apparently the Village of Herkimer does not keep these lights on in the morning either.

On the brighter side (see what I did there?), I am over 300 words.  Regular readers know I call that respectable. Now I have to finish getting ready for work.

Is This a Blog or Therapy?

This will be a very fast Tired Tuesday post with not promises as to reaching my self-imposed, admittedly arbitrary 200-word minimum.  I am ten-finger typing on my dining-room-table-top (for those of you just tuning in, it is a laptop on its last cyber legs, we dare not move it) on Wednesday morning.  I have had coffee, taken my walk, and eaten breakfast, but have yet to make my lunch.  I am, as I knew I would be, regretting not making my post last night.  In my defense, I was depressed.

I fear this must be a blogger’s sick day, or perhaps another day when I whine and cry about my own petty personal problems.  I remind myself that other people have much worse things to deal with.  This does not always help, because I feel I am an ungrateful wretch for complaining at all.  I do cultivate gratitude, pointing out to myself every little thing that I can feel thankful for.  I read in some dumb woman’s magazine that it is impossible to feel depressed and grateful at the same time.  It is not true, at least for me.

But never mind my whining, let me instead list a few things for which I can be thankful right now.  It was not raining but merely misty this morning and warm, making it a delightful morning to take a walk.  Some people had their Christmas lights on  I do love Christmas lights.  I have received a couple of Christmas cards already.  I do not have to work Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.  I am gainfully employed at a job which makes a positive difference in people’s lives.  I have a very nice family and am able to talk to my parents almost every day.

See, me?  All this good stuff.  And here is another one:  I am about to publish a blog post of over 300 words.  Is it a good blog post?  Let us not ask for miracles.  Part of me says I should just save this to drafts, it is nothing more than an attempt at self-therapy.  However, I shall hit Publish, to let others with depression know they are not alone.  I don’t know that they will be especially flattered to hear they are in the same club with me, but I cannot worry about that now.  Perhaps I should look into getting some actual therapy.

Who Likes Monday? Or Spiders?

Mondays are hard.  At least for me they are, and I know a lot of people feel the same way.  On the other hand, many people do not work Monday through Friday, and for them Monday holds no terrors.  Similarly, Friday holds little joy.  What I am worried about here is that what I write may not resonate with a sizable number of readers.  Then again, when have I ever felt like one of the majority?

Why am I arguing with myself?  Where do I think I might end up?  I have no answers to these questions.  Quick, throw in a picture of a monster!

Eeeeeeeee!

Lots of people are freaked out by spiders.  I confess to not being particularly bothered by them (see what I mean about being in the minority?).  For example,  this morning I saw one dangling from the ceiling where I work.  I let it live.  I considered trying to catch it and let it go outside, but it was pretty cold out today.  I don’t know how well spiders do in the cold.

One of my favorite hats.

And here I am with a spider on my head.  I picked up this sweet fascinator at a yard sale to benefit H.A.L.O., Helping Animals Live Organization, a cat rescue operation based in Little Falls, NY.  They are hosting an open house this Saturday.   You can visit their Facebook page for more information.

Oh look, I am over 200 words.  Sufficient for a Monstrous Monday, I think.  I hope you will tune in tomorrow, when I will try for something better than a Tired Tuesday Post.

Sunday Yum!

This morning I indulged in my new Sunday thing of treating myself to breakfast at Farm House Restaurant in Ilion.

It is small but mighty.

I felt I deserved the treat, but perhaps I flatter myself.  I slept in till after six then went for a run immediately.  After the run and before my shower,  I did the dishes and cleaned the kitchen,  including sweeping and mopping the floor.  At the risk of making myself look even worse than usual, I will confess I had not done dishes since Friday.

With a veritable tower of dishes air drying (I refuse to waste effort on what patience will accomplish), I was disinclined to dirty anything more.  I have had a few breakfasts at Farmhouse since discovering they are open Sundays.  I was delighted to return.

The restaurant is tiny but welcoming.  Last week I was fancy and had Eggs Benedict but today I had an egg sandwich with bacon and provolone on an Everything bagel.  Yum!  I also had coffee.  Since it was a good three hours later than I usually have my first cup, the hot brew was more than welcome.

The magic elixir that makes my morning better!

I greatly enjoyed my breakfast and may return on every possible Sunday.

Farmhouse Restaurant is located at  9 Central Ave., Ilion, NY,  phone number 315-895-0770.  They are open Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., closed Wednesday.

Run Thursday, Blog Friday

I did not have to go in to work till noon today, so I went for a run this morning.  I thought I would make a Running Commentary Post.  That was this morning.  Now it is evening and all I have with me is my phone, never mind why; explanations are tiresome.

That was as far as I got on Thursday.  Now it is Friday morning, and I am frantically typing on the dining-room-table-top, hoping to make a Non-Sequitur Thursday Post and get away with it.  That was a trifle dramatic.  In fact, I am not frantically typing but merely ten-finger typing. It is so much faster than pecking one letter at a time with my finger, as I was attempting to do last night (I did not even have a stylus, and that is what you might call a first world problem).

So, about yesterday’s run…  It was windy and cold, but I don’t usually mind that.  I was running early on, so it was still dark out.  Other days when I have gone to work late I waited till the sun was up, but I thought it best to do it and get it over with.  Regular readers know I have a history of talking myself out of these things.

My start was a little later than for my walks this week, with the result that more traffic was on the road.  I realized right away that I had forgotten to put on my road-guard vest (that is what we army people call reflective vests).  So no running in the road, I told myself, except of course to cross the streets.  If I got to an intersection at the same time as a car, I quickly turned the corner, so as to avoid the question of whose turn it is.  Some drivers nicely wave you ahead, but I could not count on seeing that in the dark.  Also I could not count on drivers, nice or otherwise, seeing me without my vest.

No, I did not take pictures as I ran.

I made sure I ran by my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners, because I knew I had some pictures in my Media Library that had been taken in the dark.  They are from December 2020, but I thought they would pep up the post nevertheless. Additionally, this adds to the non-sequitur quality of the post.  Side note:  some might argue that since the pictures are related to the subject at hand, they are not true non-sequiturs, but I am no hand at argument.

I did not run as far as I run on the weekends.  I felt I should recruit my energies for my day at work.  However, it was a respectable run.  As I ran, I pondered once again whether I would run the Reindeer Run 5K in Little Falls Dec. 10.  I feel I am in good enough shape to do so.  Full disclosure:  I also feel I could run a 5K at any time, in shape or not, through sheer stubbornness.  I must make that decision soon.  I will naturally let my readers know what I decide.

In the meantime, I see I am over 500 words.  That’s a lot for me!  And I did not even say much about the run.  No matter.  I find this quite respectable for a late post.  I hope my readers have been reasonable entertained.

Another picture of the Four Corners, just for good measure.

More Music on Wednesday!

Regular readers may have wondered if I was ever going to return to my Wednesday Night Thing of going to Fratello’s Pizzeria in Frankfort for music and food.  Well, tonight I finally did.  I had the best time!

I got there between 5:30 and 6:00, and noticed a bald, bearded man setting up equipment. I asked who the musical talent was.  The bartender, Kimberly, told me it was Justin, at the same time the man setting up told me, “Justin!”  I said, “What’s your last name, Justin?”  He told me Smithson but I could put “Smithsonian.”  I told him I would put it in my blog post, and he acquiesced with Smithson.  Another patron told me Justin was the lead singer with Showtime.  I have heard of that band but never seen them, so I was interested to hear this Justin.

Great guitar!

I was not disappointed.  He opened with “Layla,” followed by “Peaceful, Easy Feeling.”  He asked for requests, so after a couple other numbers,  I asked if he knew “Sister Golden Hair.”  He looked up the lyrics on his IPad, saying he would rather cheat and do that rather than cut the song short.  He did a wonderful job on the song.

“Looking up lyrics on your IPad isn’t cheating,” I told him.  “It is research!”  He liked that.

I like the hockey pennants you can see in the background.

I greatly enjoyed my evening.  I even stayed for one more song than I intended, dancing with another patron.  It was a friendly crowd at a friendly venue with a friendly, talented singer.  How I have missed my Wednesday Night Thing!

Fratello’s Pizzeria is located at 158 E. Main St., Frankfort, NY, phone number 315-894-8484.  They are open 11 a.m. to 10 pm. Monday through Saturday, 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday.  Local music is featured other nights than Wednesday.  You can follow them on Facebook to find out more.

Tired Today, Tired Tomorrow?

I always think I am going to come up with a better blog post tomorrow, but Tired Tuesday often follows Monstrous Monday, doesn’t it?  I am tempted to justify myself with the argument, “Well, it’s not tomorrow, is it?  It’s today!”  You know, like the signs you sometimes see in bars, “Free Beer Tomorrow!”

I could go off on a philosophical riff here, about how we are always waiting for tomorrow, for something better in the soon-but-never-quite-gets-here future.  I rather doubt I could come up with anything profound, and anyways, I like to save the half-baked philosophy for Lame Post Friday.

In the meantime, I would like to come up with a reasonably entertaining blog post today.  I went for a walk this morning, as I usually do.  I wish I could have taken pictures for an illustrated Pedestrian Post, but my phone does not take good pictures in the dark.

It is kind of fascinating, walking in the dark.  Things look mysterious.  I like to go by houses that have lights on.  Otherwise, I feel I am the only soul awake, and I get lonely.  This happened especially when I was at my previous job and took my morning walks around four (or was it around the block?) (teehee).  Now I don’t start work till eight so take my walks around six.

Hmmm… I’ve a feeling my walks are more interesting to me than this blog post will be to my readers.  Oh dear.

The best thing to do with a foolish post is to cut it short.  I am, in fact, over 250 words.  Let’s see if I can do any better on Wednesday (see:  I did not say “tomorrow”).

Once Again, I Make with the Monsters

I guess it’s time to make my Monstrous Monday Post.  Past time, actually.  I read where you should not be on your device too soon before bedtime or you’ll have trouble sleeping.  I would actually like to go to sleep right now.  However, I also want to make a blog post, and I most likely will not be able to sleep anyways.  So let’s make with the monsters, shall we?

It’s a shadow of a doubt, I mean a shadow of a count!

Here is a particularly evocative shot from my beloved Nosferatu, the silent masterpiece from 1922.  Regular readers know he is my favorite guy.  They made great use of shadows in older horror movies.  Unfortunately,  I was just looking and could not find any more.  Isn’t that annoying?  I could have had a whole theme going on here.

Eerie, yes?

Since I could not find shadows, how about a reflection?  This is from Carnival of Souls, a creepy low budget delight from 1962.  When I say low budget, I do not mean a schlock-fest (although I love some of those, too).  I mean they created a deliciously unsettling movie using very little in the area of special effects.  Atmosphere for days!

I think something bad is about to happen.

I searched my Media Library for another shadow or reflection or anything I could relate to the previous two pictures and found nothing.  So I close with a mysterious bull’s eye.  I have no idea what this picture is from.  I don’t even know if I knew when I first downloaded it, and I am far too lazy to research the matter.

On the brighter side,  I am over 250 words.  Score!  I wonder if I will be able to sleep.
