I Would Feel Spunky If I Could Do Shakespeare Again

Last night, I told myself all I needed to do was make a Throwback Thursday Post. How hard could that be, I argued. Choose a couple of pictures, peck in a few words… that is, on my Tablet. Then I thought about how finicky my Tablet has been concerning my WordPress Media Library, and I was so tired anyways… So here I am, prior to five Friday morning, on my still-hanging-by-a-thread laptop, ten-finger typing, and waiting for coffee.

I must admit, I am enjoying the ten finger typing, and the coffee just showed up (Steve really is a very satisfactory husband). Let us see what I can do with the Media Library.

Adorable, yes?

I looked at March 2017 (the laptop behaving beautifully for the moment) and found this sweet picture of our dearly missed pooch, Spunky. I SO miss having a dog! My ambition is to get my house cleaned up and repaired so we can adopt another doggy friend. It is difficult as tired as I am these days, but I encourage myself to work a little at a time.

I MISS this!

I was looking for another canine photograph, but I can rarely resist a Theatre Throwback. This was an early rehearsal for The Tempest, as presented by LiFT, Little Falls Theatre Company in 2017. Too long ago! A few of us were meeting in early 2020, scheming how to bring Shakespeare back to Little Falls, but, alas, COVID intervened.

There’s no people like show people!

Here is a picture of one of our meetings, held at Meeples Mug House, which is also sadly departed (totally understood the proprietors’ reasons, but still sad).

Well, that was pretty easy, getting over 250 words (I may be over 300 by the end of this paragraph!). My headline suggested itself after I found the second picture. Does jumping subjects like this make this also a Non-Sequitur Thursday post? Discuss amongst yourselves.

(Yes, over 300 words. Teehee)

In My Defense, Here’s a Blog Post

What is it with me and missed blog posts these days?  It is most embarrassing. I’m on furlough, for heaven’s sake; what else do I have to do but write blog posts?  In my defense, we are all on quarantine, rendering many Mohawk Valley Adventures impossible. In my prosecution (I truly cannot think of a good opposite for “in my defense” and would welcome suggestions), do I not have a vivid imagination?  Should I not be able to think of things?

That inner dialogue could go on all day.

I am afraid I am not making good use of my time at home.  There, I have admitted it.  It is a source of some mortification to me.  Additionally,  I am afraid I have written about that in this space before.  Can I think of anything new to say?  Maybe I could just add a picture to pep things up.

Full disclosure: I did not step on each of those colored spots.

Here is a sight I see a lot these days.  It is the path over what used to be a hydraulic canal.  I have been running and walking most days.  That is one thing I can feel pleased with myself about, although one could argue that I am not running as far nor as fast as might be expected.  I think I will not indulge in another self argument.

Preview of Coming Attractions

To further cheer myself up, I will remind myself of things I will be able to do again someday.  Meeples Mug House in Little Falls, NY, a board game cafe, was one of the first businesses to responsibly close for the pandemic.  It is one of the first places I want to go when quarantine is lifted.

So we have an apology, a self argument, a couple of pictures, and a plug for a local business. I’ll call that good enough for a late Tired Tuesday post.

We Love Meeples!

For my late (judge me if you are so inclined) Saturday post, I would like to give a brief shout-out to the place LiFTers have been meeting to discuss summer Skakespeare: Meeples Mug House in Little Falls, NY.

LiFT, in case you did not know, is Little Falls Theatre Company.  For five years they brought Shakespeare to the Mohawk Valley but have not done so for the last two.  They have done a few other things along the way: Cheese Plays for the Little Falls Cheese Festival, a re-staging of the wonderful readers theatre play Strike Story by Angela Harris, as well as a couple of murder mysteries.  But now we want the Bard!

However, my current purpose is not to talk about plays but about the awesome board game cafe that is Meeples.  We love the place, and proprietor Matt Powers has been very generous about letting us meet there.

We love Meeples!

I like to get there well before our meeting and have a sandwich.  Yesterday I got a Nacho Turn Yet panini.  Yum!  It came with veggie chips, which were delicious, and I had Utica Roasting coffee as well.

Steven loves coffee.

We like to sit at the bar and chat up Matt.  Then for the meeting we retreated to the back room, where we could gather in a circle.

This is actually from our first brainstorming session, but you can see how comfy we are.

I think next time I am at Meeples,  I am going to get a mug cake, even if it does set me back a bit in pursuing my weight loss goals.  They have different flavors and a variety of toppings to choose from.

I must also get there when I do not have a meeting so I can play a game or two.  I have a few family members I feel sure would like to join me.  I wonder if Meeples has Clue.

Shakespeare to Svengoolie to Julie

The Blogger’s Sick Days continue, but there is light at the end of the tunnel, although there is always the possibility that it is an oncoming train.  Be that as it may, I am sitting on my couch, watching a DVR’d episode of Svengoolie and hoping to make some semblance of a blog post.

Svengoolie is showing Creature of the Black Lagoon.

I have been feeling marginally better.  Whereas on Friday, my head was in pain, today it was more lightheaded.  Comforting myself with the fact that having been on antibiotics for at least 24 hours I was not contagious (although I believe sinus infections are not contagious to begin with),  I went to the second session of Brainstorming the Bard at Meeples Mug House in Little Falls.

We made a little more progress in our quest to bring Shakespeare back to Little Falls this summer.  I shall blog more about that later (ooh, here’s a Freudian typo: I first typed “bore” instead of “more”).

In the meantime,  how about a couple more pictures of the Creature?  I just love a good monster movie.

“You look a little different from your match.com picture.”

Julie Adams certainly was a lovely young lady.  She was so gracious to fans of this movie all her life.  I was very sad to hear when she passed away fairly recently.

And here she is in later years, still lovely and gracious.

I’m afraid this is not a particularly Scattered Saturday post.  Then again, my health, Shakespeare,  Svengoolie,  Julie Adams.  It will have to do.  Happy Saturday,  everyone!

Too Much Storm for Brains?

What theatre person wouldn’t want to be part of this great group?

Here is the post I meant to write yesterday about the efforts of LiFT, Little Falls Theatre Company,  to bring Shakespeare back to Little Falls and the surrounding area in 2020.  We had a brainstorming session at Meeples Mug House last Saturday.

A great place to go, even if you’re not Brainstorming the Bard.

The weather was pretty terrible last Saturday, but we made it to Little Falls and hoped others would too.  Before we met, I put a quarter into the old fashioned gumball machine they recently installed.  At least, the machine did not contain gumballs,  but it always seems wrong to me to call it a prize machine.  Do any readers know the right name for it?

Whatever you call them, they are fun.

I got a meeple!  I declared he would be the mascot for Summer Shakespeare 2020 and put him on the table we met around.  Laura,  LiFT member extraordinaire, added a candle with a picture from a previous Shakespeare production.

Can you see Sir Meeple on top?

Only a few people were present, but we talked about a lot of ideas.  My idea was to do scenes from Shakespeare rather than a full-length play.  We discussed different ideas for which scenes, how to put them together, and more stuff.

Here are the brainstormers, minus me, who was taking the picture.

Since so few people had shown up to brainstorm, we decided to have another session on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 3 p.m.  In the meantime,  I undertook to start a Facebook Group as a means to communicate with interested parties.  I rather shamefacedly admit that I just got around to doing that today.  In my defense, I wanted to come up with a catchy title.

Catchy or not, the Facebook Group is called Give Shakespeare a LiFT.   My husband Steven helped me pick from a few ideas I had.

I hope more people make it to our second brainstorming session.  I hope people contact me via the Facebook Group or another method if they are interested and cannot make it.  I hope my blog readers are interested to read about our continuing Shakespeare efforts.

Bring your Brain!

I’ll be at Meeples this week!

Rather than my usual Monstrous Monday or painful whining about being unable to make a blog post, I thought I would do another plug for Brainstorming the Bard this Saturday.  All interested parties are invited to Meeples Mug House in Little Falls, NY for the purpose of bringing summer Shakespeare back!  LiFT, Little Falls Theatre Company, previously performed at Benton’s Landing on July’s Third Thursday and at Canal Place during Chicks Along the Mohawk.  Let’s do it again!

A dramatic moment from a previous performance

I guess I don’t have a whole lot else to say about it, so maybe this will be a monstrous post after all, or I may whine about not having a lot to say.  No, no, we can’t have that!  I’ll look for more pictures.

A full cast photo from that year.

Look how colorful we are!  What a fun bunch!  Wouldn’t you like to join us and speak forsoothly?

Swords drawn! Yikes!

I have been writing down a few ideas of what we can do.  I am hoping other people will also have ideas, or at least not shoot down mine.

I’m the one in the orange tights.

Meeples Mug House is located at 598 E. Main St., Little Falls, NY.   Brainstorming the Bard will happen this Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m.  I hope to see you there!

Ah, Shakespeare!

“Much Ado About Nothing”

Anybody remember this fun bunch of people?  It is LiFT, the Little Falls Theatre Company.  It was their second year, and the first year I participated with them.

“The Tempest”

And here they are again, a year later, a different script, and a few different cast members. Another great theatre experience!

This has the makings of a fine Throwback Thursday post. However, that is not my intention today.  I want to invite all local theatre folks to help us bring Shakespeare back to Little Falls!

You see, for one reason and another, LiFT has not presented a Shakespeare play for the last two years.  A few of us are hoping to not make it three.  To that end, we have planned a preliminary meeting, to discuss ideas and make plans.  We will meet at 3 p.m. Saturday,  Jan. 18, at Meeples Mug House, 598 E. Main St., Little Falls, NY.

For non-local readers, I hope you will find this post interesting as a Preview of Coming Attractions.  You know that I will make a lot of blog posts about a new theatrical endeavor!

For local readers, you can find out more on Facebook on Meeples Mug House page, LiFT’s page, or the event Brainstorming the Bard.

I’ll close with one more Shakespeare picture.  Wish us to break a leg!

My colleague and I look ready to break a couple of legs here.

Mmmmmm… Meeples!

I just realized I did not write about a couple Mohawk Valley Adventures I had last Saturday in conjunction with the Little Falls Cheese Festival.  In lieu (that’s one of my favorite words) of my usual Monstrous Monday, therefore,  I will give a brief shout-out to Meeples Mug House.

In between performances of Where’s the Cheese Monger? (remember, that play I directed?  I believe I wrote a blog post or two about it) I went in search of a cold drink. I ended up at Meeples, where I had my first ever chocolate egg cream.  Yum!

While I drank, I sat at a tall table (I love sitting at a tall table) and tried to write, with I admit indifferent success.  I also watched two young men making shaved ice. It looked pretty good, especially on such a hot day.  Their business is called Sweet Chillz.

Sweet Chillz.

I came back after the play and took a few pictures.  I also had another egg cream.

It was a very popular item.

You can’t really see it, but the line went way back.

A frantic moment behind the counter.

Naturally I wanted a picture of Laura and Matt, who own the place.

My dates for the afternoon.

My husband Steven and friend Kim  joined me for my second visit to Meeples.  Alas that I cannot go back again for a few days.  They are open 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 5 to 10 p.m. Friday,  2 to 10 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday.   Meeples is located at 598 E. Main St., Little Falls NY, phone number 315-868-7488.

So Scattered I Slacked

I had a fun filled Saturday.  Late in the day, I realized I had yet to make my blog post.  Now here I am, on Sunday morning (which may or may not match my WordPress timestamp; I don’t know how to fix these things), another poat behind.  I maintain my hopes of getting caught up.  We shall see.

I did not run Saturday morning, because I had to be in Little Falls by 9:30 and I wanted to be leisurely.   I was leisurely enough to write my post cards but not leisurely enough to walk to the post office with them.  Then I had a last minute crisis and was almost late anyways.

The event bringing me to Little Falls was  Where’s the Cheese Monger? the play by Angela Harris which enlivened the Little Falls Cheese Festival. During these two events, I also visited Meeples Mug House to enjoy a cool beverage.

Returning to Herkimer, I had a great meal and a few laughs with friends at Salvatore’s.  Then it was back home for the movie watching portion of the evening.  We enjoyed Straitjacket and The Lost Boys.  I was in the mood for scary movies.

I think it was in between movies that I remembered my blog post, alas, only briefly.  But here is my Saturday post only a day late.  I fully intend to make my Sunday post TODAY.  Ooh, maybe I could make an unprecedented third post and be on my way to being caught up at last. It could happen.
